Extractions Kalamzaoo MI
When a tooth cannot be saved with restoration procedures, tooth extraction may be necessary. The dentists at Gentle Dentistry provide general extractions and extractions of wisdom teeth for our patients in and around Kalamazoo, MI.
The development of anesthetics and sedatives have made extraction much less painful than in the past. Often, patients have very little discomfort or none at all. Prior to the extraction, the dentist will use a topical or injectable anesthetic (Novacaine), or both to numb the area surrounding the tooth that will be extracted.
After the procedure, you may have some very minor bleeding. Depending on the level of infection, some patients may need to take an antibiotic. Immediately following the procedure, most dentists discourage smoking, drinking with a straw, or brushing the teeth and rinsing the mouth vigorously to avoid irritating the wound and encourage healing. Cold compresses can be used on the check in the area where the tooth was extracted for pain.
Wisdom teeth are actually a third set of molars that grow in the very back of the upper and lower mouth. Few people have room in the mouth or the wisdom teeth to grow in without causing a problem. Usually, the teeth grow in close to the existing teeth and cause problems. In some cases, the teeth become impacted, which can cause inflammation and extreme discomfort.
